For many years now the modelling and simulation of road traffic has become an important part of road traffic system engineering. An often neglected problem is the efficient integration of vehicle actuated control of traffic lights into traffic models of inner-city networks. The great effort regarding the modelling of several traffic signal systems requires an adequate approximation of the control behaviour, especially if large road networks are under simulation.

Another challenge is the estimation of the control quality of traffic light systems. For the public authorities it is hardly possible to review the control and behaviour of traffic light systems after bringing them into service. Furthermore, until now special hard- and software interfaces were needed to get access to the traffic light controller. If such equipment is not available and the traffic light controller is not connected to traffic management central there is no possibility to monitor the traffic light system automatically.

In contrast, the eLSA-System offers manufacturer independent analysis of traffic light systems without any access to the traffic light controller. The observation and recording of signal head activities is carried out via a battery supplied mobile unit with an optical sensor. The sensor unit can be easily mounted on the signal head without any influence to the visibility. The analysis software eLSA-Master enables the user to compare actual measured data with planning documents by the help of signal timing plans and animated intersection views. If more than one intersection has been monitored the eLSA-Master is able to analyse the coordination between them.
