The mobile traffic jam detection system joins a passive infrared sensor (PIR) with a GPRS transceiver and a solar energy supply. This leads to a maximum in flexibility and cost efficiency. The mobile detection system is able to transmit the collected traffic data as well as further parameters such as temperatures, battery charge condition and the general system status with a minimum delay. The system can be set up and maintained remotely via GPRS.

The transmission interval of traffic and environmental data can be freely customised according to the “Technische Lieferbedingungen für Streckenstationen1” (TLS). PIR sensors can be connected to the detection system for capturing traffic data. Furthermore other sensors, such as pollution detectors, can be connected to the detection system to capture environmental data for example. Therefore the system can additionally be used to control threshold values in urban green zones.

According to the TLS, the detection system transmits traffic data such as quantity and speed data (maximum, minimum, average) of passing cars divided into passenger cars and lorries. The gathered data is georeferenced and stored in a database. The data can be further processed and provided to end users via the internet or information services such as SMS or (digital) radio broadcast.

The hardware components of the traffic jam detection system can be easily mounted on available masts with a stainless steel strip. The lightweight and small dimensions of the components allow the mounting of the system at many different locations in a very short space of time. Furthermore it is easily possible to move the mobile jam detector to another location in the case of a temporary changed flow of traffic (e. g. road works).
